Get Rid Of The Pacifier Once And For All

August 4, 2008

Pacifier

Getting a child to break a habit is difficult and, sometimes, laborious work.  Not only is it hard on the parents, but it is equally hard on the child.  So, when it comes to getting rid of the pacifier, it’s no wonder parents tend to put it off for as long as they can.

The problem in doing this, is that eventually they will be shamed out of it by their peers if you wait to long.  And, nobody wants their child shamed into doing (or not doing) something.  So, the goal is to break them of the habit in a safe environment.  Now, how you do that is the difficult part.

I ran across some tips on how to break the pacifier habit at Howdini and thought I’d share them with you.

1.  Restrict the use of a pacifier to certain times of the day.  For instance, only allow them to have the pacifier during nap time and bedtime.  Slowly over time, you pull those times away and eventually your child won’t want/need the pacifier anymore.

2.  Snip the pacifier off in little portions bit by bit.  Over time the pacifier will no longer exist and thus, your child won’t want it anymore.

3.  Have a big pacifier purge.  You can ‘mail them away’, throw them away, or ‘give them to another baby’.  Obviously, you wouldn’t actually give them to another baby to be used, but you get the drift.

Do you have other tips for breaking the pacifier habit?  Leave a comment for all to benefit from.
