Pickle OrnamentIt’s September which means that images of Fall and Winter begin to permeate my mind…and I love it!  It’s the best time of the year filled with lots of family fun.  So to bring in the Fall, I thought it would be a good idea to get you thinking about starting some Christmas traditions.  You have plenty of time to do your research and plan before December 25.

Ten Christmas Traditions Worth Starting:

  1. Pick out a family Christmas Tree together.  If you live in an area where you can go and cut one down, do it.  Get your hands dirty and sappy sticky and love every minute of it.  If this isn’t an option, go as a family to the local Christmas Tree farm and pick out the perfect Christmas tree for your place.
  2. Make a Christmas ornaments for each other.  This is a great family activity that lets your kids exercise their creativity.  When they grow up and move away, send them off with all of their ornaments.  They’ll appreciate it when they celebrate their first Christmas away from home.
  3. Hide the Pickle Ornament.  Not sure where this tradition started, but it’s a fun one for the kids.  Hide a Pickle Ornament on the tree.  On Christmas morning the first child that finds it gets a small present.
  4. Write a letter to Santa.  This is an oldie but goodie.  Save the letters and give them to your child when they move away.  They’ll get a good laugh as they re-read that letter that tells Santa they want a new brother.
  5. Read Twas the Night Before Christmas while you sip hot chocolate.  Gather around the fireplace, sip your hot chocolate, and read the epic book each year on Christmas Eve.  I still cherish those memories, and I know the book word for word.
  6. Make a Gingerbread House and then eat it.  Yummy!
  7. Decorate the house as a family.  Put up the nativity scene and hang those Christmas lights.
  8. Go caroling to those families that have helped you out all year long.  Then leave behind some good cookies as a thank you!  We all know that it takes a village to raise a child, so THANK YOUR VILLAGE!  Jon & Kate Plus Eight did this and it was a huge hit.
  9. Give a goat to a needy family.  That’s right.  As a family, donate a goat (or any other assortment of animals) to a family in need to end hunger.  Heifer International’s mission is to work with communities around the world to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth, and they currently have several giving opportunities that help achieve that mission.   Visit Heifer International.
  10. Turn Christmas upside down.  Instead of giving each other gifts, adopt a family unable to afford giving each other presents and ‘do Christmas for them’.  There is no better way to teach your children the meaning of Christmas, benefit of serving, value of giving, and appreciation for what they have been blessed with.

What other Christmas traditions does your family have?  Leave a comment below for all to benefit from.

I love this article. It reminds me of the real meaning behind Christmas. This year my family will be playing Hide the Pickle Ornament on Christmas day.

    Thank you!

I”m always thinking about C-mas and love new traditions. I think I’ll do the pickle one.

One of my favorite traditions though is wrapping enough movies and books to last through Advent. We unwrap one each night.
