I recently came across a blog where a mom took her children stroller skating. Before reading this blog, I had never heard of stroller skating but after reading about her experience and seeing the pictures, I couldn’t stop thinking (and laughing) about this workout/social outing for moms! The next morning, I called my local skating rink and to my surprise they had a time slot each month for stroller skating (and they told me if more people started coming, we could make it a weekly event.)
Five days later, I found myself on a pair of roller skates pushing a double stroller. I haven’t been on a pair of roller skates in 20 years. I think the last time I was on skates was at my 10 year old birthday party. Despite my lack of experience and time on the rink, I had a blast! My friend and I made laps around the skating rink talking, laughing and singing along to the 80s music. The kids LOVED it too!
Stroller skating is a great workout and for me, it was actually easier to skate while I was pushing the stroller - it gave me something to hold onto and lean into. (I recommend a sturdy stroller, no umbrella strollers). It’s fun to catch up on life with your girlfriends while skating in circles. It’s different than most playdates because you can actually focus on the conversation with your friends rather than chasing your kids. The kids are strapped in the stroller and amazingly, my kiddos were abnormally quiet as we skated around the rink. I think the music and the “breeze” in their hair was relaxing.
So, as cooler weather approaches and you are looking for fun things to do with your babies and toddlers, call your local skating rink and see if they offer stroller skating! It cost me $4 to take myself and two young boys - and the $4 included the price of skates. What a deal!
P.S. Be sure to be very careful on the skates. Don’t try this if you are pregnant and never hold a child while you are on skates. Both of you could be seriously injured.
